Health and Safety Resources

Minimizing risks to health and safety for people served in supported living is an obligation of all SLS service providers.  Here are some key sites for developing resources that will help you minimize health and safety hazards, while encouraging natural risk taking.

  • California Health Advocates - information on Medicare coverage for Californians and resources for professionals working with California's Medicare population
  • California HealthCare Foundation - An independent philanthropy committed to improving the way health care is delivered and financed in California. By promoting innovations in care and broader access to information, their goal is to ensure that all Californians can get the care they need, when they need it, at a price they can afford.
  • California Healthline - A daily digest of health news, policy and opinion from the California Healthcare Foundation
  • California Department of Public Health (CDPH) - Will provide more focused state leadership in public health and health care financing and create a more effective public health infrastructure in California.
  • Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) - "To preserve and improve the health status of all Californians."
  • California Medicare Options - Medicare HMO in California, as well as select Medigap policies, giving each a one- to five-star rating based on total benefits for the money.
  • Child Health and Disability Prevention Program - Child Health and Disability Prevention Program: CHDP is a preventive program that delivers periodic health assessments and services to low income children and youth in California.  CHDP provides care coordination to assist families with medical appointment scheduling, transportation, and access to diagnostic and treatment services.
  • Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance - Improving the lives of people with mood disorders.
  • Home and Community-Based Services Waiver (HCBS-DD) - Provides home and community-based services to developmentally disabled persons who are Regional Center consumers.
  • How Can We Improve the Health of People with Developmental Disabilities? - Contains several links to health-related resources on this topic.
  • Healthfinder - Department of Health and Human Services site. Searchable by subject; has links to information from government health agencies, public health groups, professional groups, universities, support groups, medical journals.
  • JRS Medical - Discounted Medical Supplies, Medical Equipment and Home Healthcare Products.
  • Masune First Aide and Safety - Masune First Aid & Safety offers online ordering for first aid products and medical safety supplies to businesses, organizations, industries, schools and individuals.
  • Medi-Cal - Medi-Cal is California's Medicaid program. This is a public health insurance program which provides needed health care services for low-income individuals including families with children, seniors, persons with disabilities, foster care, pregnant women, and low income people with specific diseases such as tuberculosis, breast cancer or HIV/AIDS.
  • U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) - Improving the health, safety, and well-being of America.
